Bella Notte Linens celebrates thirty years this month. The company started in a Northern California garage in October 1996, back when luxury bedding often came with a dry-cleaning bill attached, on the fairly stubborn idea that you should be able to put the beautiful linens in the wash and not think twice about it. That turned out to be a bigger idea than it sounded at the time. The family-owned textile house helped pioneer a new kind of luxury for the American market: one meant to be lived in.

Thirty years on, the way the work gets done has barely changed. Every piece is still cut, sewn, and garment dyed to order in small batches in Northern California. Nothing is made for finished-goods inventory. An order comes in, the fabric is cut and sewn by master sewers, and the finished piece moves to the dye house, where its color is mixed and measured by hand. Subtle variations from one dye lot to another become part of the character of the finished textile. 

It is a slow way to run a textile business, but for Bella Notte, it is the proper way: giving each piece the care and attention that something made for the home deserves. It is also why the work has never left California. Bella Notte continues to work with longtime local makers and the same artisan dye house it has partnered with for more than twenty-five years. Studio, dye house, and office remain close to one another in Northern California, keeping the people who design, make, and finish the collection connected to the work and to one another.

The company has grown, of course. One garage became twenty signature fabric collections and more than 200 retail partners across the country. Madera Luxe, the TENCEL™ Lyocell that has become one of the company’s best-selling fabrics, is sourced from sustainably managed forests. Silk velvet is still dyed by hand before it is quilted. Among the newest introductions are Marisette, an organic cotton jacquard with a Regency influence, finished with the signature linen ruffle Bella Notte is known for, and Trettino, a reversible Art Deco sunburst rendered in cotton and chenille jacquard.

None of that changes what a Bella Notte piece has to do once it reaches a home. It goes in the washing machine. It arrives preshrunk. It is free from harsh chemical finishes and is garment dyed using low-impact, non-hazardous dyes measured by hand in small batches. And because each piece is made and dyed to order, Bella Notte does not produce finished goods against a forecast, leaving no seasonal inventory to mark down or discard.
